The reproaching women's rebukes surround the bewildered lover's heart;
The reproaches of reproachers surround the heart of the wanderer,
The censure of critics circles the wanderer's heart, while the love of the beloved dwells in its deepest core.
And love for the beloved ones lies within its black core.
And the passions of lovers emanate from its darkness.
Blame complains to the scolding women of its own burning heat, and he turns away, as they chide, from his violent grief.

Reproach complains to the reproaching women of the heart's heat,
The blamer complains to the blamers of his burning,
And within my soul, O critic, reigns the King for whose sake I have angered all mankind merely to gain his grace.
And recoils from its searing torment when they reproach.
And avoids when he is blamed for his joys.
If he has taken possession of hearts, it is because he has mastered Time itself, in its earth and its heavens.
وَبِمُهجَتيand with my lifeblood ياO عاذِليmy reproacher المَلِكُthe king الَّذيwhom
أَسخَطتُI angered كُلَّall الناسِthe people فيin إِرضائِهِpleasing him
And with my lifeblood I would ransom, O my reproacher, the king whom
By my delight, O my reproacher, the king whom
The sun is numbered among his enviers, Victory among his companions, and the Sword is but one of his names.
I angered all people to please.
I angered all people to please him.
Yet where are those three before three of his traits: his radiance, his lofty pride, and his piercing resolve?
إِنif كانَwas قَدindeed مَلَكَmastered القُلوبَthe hearts فَإِنَّهُthen indeed he
مَلَكَmastered الزَمانَtime بِأَرضِهِwith its earth وَسَمائِهِand its sky
If he has indeed mastered hearts, then he has
If he has ruled the hearts, he surely
Epochs have passed without bringing forth his likeness, and now that he has come, they fail to produce his peer.
Mastered time, with its earth and sky.
Has ruled the time with its land and sky.

The sun is among his enviers, and victory among
The sun is jealous of him, and victory is
His companions; the sword is among his names.
Among his peers, and the sword is among his names.
أَينَwhere الثَلاثَةُthe three مِنcompared with ثَلاثِthree خِلالِهِhis qualities
مِنnamely حُسنِهِhis beauty وَإِبائِهِand his noble pride وَمَضائِهِand his sharp resolve
Where do those three stand beside his three qualities—
Where are the three compared to his three traits
His beauty, his noble pride, and his sharp resolve?
Of beauty, pride, and prosperity?
مَضَتِpassed الدُهورُthe ages وَماand never أَتَينَthey came بِمِثلِهِwith his like

The ages passed, and never brought forth his like;
Eras have passed and none has come like him,
And he has indeed appeared, and they have failed to produce his equals.
And when he came they fell short of equalling him.
