Stop! Woe to you! What made me see your reproach as more blameworthy
Enough of my blame while I blame you,
Desist, for I see—woe to you—that your blame is the greater sin,
was grief that settled upon a heart grown still,
A care that made a star dwell in my heart,
A sorrow that has settled upon my heart like the unmoving stars,
وَخَيالُand a phantom of جِسمٍa body لَمdid not يُخَلِّleave لَهُfor it الهَوىpassion

and the phantom of a body for which passion left
And the image of a body that love did not
The mere ghost of a body, for which passion has left behind
no flesh for sickness to waste away, nor any blood,
Leave as flesh to be wasted by disease, nor as blood.
Neither flesh for sickness to wither, nor a single drop of blood.
وَخُفوقُand the throbbing of قَلبٍa heart لَوif رَأَيتِyou saw لَهيبَهُits blaze

ياO جَنَّتيmy paradise لَظَنَنتِyou would surely think فيهِwithin it جَهَنَّماHell
and a heart's throbbing—if you saw its blaze,
And the fluttering of a heart - if you could see its flame,
And the pounding of a heart—if you but saw its blazing fire,
O my paradise, you would think Hell lay within it.
My paradise, you would think hell was in it.
O my paradise, you would deem that Hell itself raged within.

And when a cloud of love's rejection flashes lightning,
And when the cloud of loving barrier lightened,
And when the cloud of love’s rejection flashes with lightning,
it turns every love's sweetness into bitter colocynth.
It left the sweetest of all loves bitter.
It renders the sweetness of all affection into bitter gall.

O face of Dahiya, but for you, never would
O face that brightened life - without you
O face of calamity, were it not for your existence,
wasting sickness have devoured my body and crushed my bones.
Grief would have consumed my body and crushed the bones.
Wasting sickness would not have devoured my flesh nor crushed my bones.

If forgetting love has enriched her, then I
If solace has made her rich, I have become
If indifference has enriched her spirit, then surely I
have become destitute of my liver and of her.
Ruined of my liver and of her destitute.
Have become destitute—bereft of my heart and bereft of her.

A bough growing on a wilderness's twin dunes,
A branch on the slopes of desolation growing -
She is a tender branch springing from the desert dune,
the sun of day bearing a dark night.
The sun of day makes the night darker.
A sun of the day that carries aloft a dark and heavy night.

Opposites were never united in a harmonious whole
The opposites were not brought together in a resemblance
Never have opposites been united within a single form,
except to make me, to my own loss, a prize,
Except to make me find my love a gain.
Save to make me a spoil of war through my own ruin.

as in the qualities of our peerless Abu al-Fadl, which
Like the attributes of our unique father Al Fadl that
Like the traits of our peerless one, Abu al-Fadl—traits which,
dazzled, so he made his describers speak and struck them dumb.
Dazzled, making his describers speak and fall silent.
Having dazzled, grant speech to his praisers yet strike them dumb with awe.

أَعطاكَhe gave you مُعتَذِراًapologetically كَمَنlike someone who قَدhas أَجرَماcommitted a crime
He hastens to give you; and if you hurry him,
He gives readily so if you hurry him
He bestows upon you unasked; yet if you hasten him,
he gives you with apologies, like one who has committed a crime.
He gives apologizing like one who has sinned.
He gives with an apology, as one who has committed a crime.

And he sees greatness in being seen as humble,
And he sees magnificence as being seen humble
He perceives true greatness in appearing humble,
and sees lowliness in being seen as haughty.
And sees humility as being seen grand.
And regards it as base lowliness to appear proud.

He championed deeds over delay, as though
He helped the doer over the demander as if
He championed action against delay, acting as though
he deemed asking for bounty forbidden.
Asking for gifts was forbidden gain.
He deemed it forbidden for a request to precede the gift.
ياO أَيُّهاyou المَلَكُangel المُصَفّىthe refined one جَوهَراًin substance
مِنfrom ذاتِthe essence of ذيthe possessor of المَلَكوتِdominion أَسمىthe loftiest مَنthose who سَماrose high
O angel, distilled in substance
O you the immaculate king, quintessence
O Angel whose very essence is refined and pure,
from the essence of the Lord of Dominion, highest of the high.
Of the essence of the Lord of Lords supremely high.
Derived from the Divine Essence, the highest of those who ascend.
نورٌa light تَظاهَرَmanifested itself فيكَin you لاهوتِيَّةًdivinity
فَتَكادُso you almost تَعلَمُknow عِلمَknowledge of ماwhat لَنwill never يُعلَماbe known
A light, divine in nature, manifests itself in you,
A light associated in you divinely
A light manifests within you, divine in its nature,
so you almost have knowledge of what will never be known.
Almost knowing the knowledge of what will not be known.
Until you well-nigh possess the knowledge of the Unknowable.
وَيُهِمُّand longs فيكَin you إِذاwhen نَطَقتَyou speak فَصاحَةًeloquently

And when you speak eloquently, there stirs within you
And an eloquence stirs in you when you speak
And when you speak with eloquence, it stirs the desire
from every limb of yours a longing to speak.
As if every limb of you would speak.
In every one of your limbs to burst into speech.

I see, yet I think I am asleep;
I can see and I think I'm dreaming -
I see clearly, yet I deem myself asleep;
who ever dreamed of God, that I should be dreaming?
Who dreams of God - I have dreamed.
For who is it that dreams of the Divine, that I too might dream?

The sight was so overwhelming to me that
Seeing grew too great for me until
The vision has grown so vast before me that truly,
certainty born of sight became an illusion.
Certainty from seeing became illusion.
Certainty born of sight has turned into mere illusion.
ياO مَنone whose لِجودِfor the generosity of يَدَيهِhis two hands فيin أَموالِهِhis wealth

O you whose hands' generosity visits upon your wealth
O you whose open hands giving wealth
O you, whose hands’ generosity toward his own wealth
punishments that turn to blessings for orphans,
Have harms that come back upon the orphans blessedly.
Is a scourge upon the gold, yet becomes a blessing to the orphan;
حَتّىuntil يَقولَsay الناسَpeople ماذاthis man is not عاقِلاًsane
وَيَقولَand says بَيتُthe house of المالِwealth ماذاthis man is not مُسلِماa Muslim
until people say, 'This man is not sane!'
Until people say what - being rational!
Until the people ask, "What kind of sane man is this?"
and the treasury says, 'This man is no Muslim!'
And the public treasury says what - being Muslim!
And the Treasury cries out, "What kind of Muslim is this?"
إِذكارُreminding مِثلِكَone like you تَركُleaving off إِذكاريmy reminding لَهُto him

I remind one like you by not reminding him,
To mention your like leaves mentioning me
To remind one such as you is to abandon the need for reminding,
since you need no interpreter for what I want.
Since you want not what I want for a translator.
For you require no interpreter to know what I desire.
