مُحَمَّدُMuhammad بنَson of زُرَيقٍZurayq ماnot نَرىwe see أَحَداanyone
إِذاif فَقَدناكَwe lose you يُعطيgives قَبلَbefore أَنthat يَعِداhe promises
Muhammad ibn Zurayq, we see no one—
Muhammad ibn Zuriq, we see no one
O Muhammad bin Zurayq, we see not a single soul,
if we lose you—who gives before he promises.
If we lose you, who gives before asking
Who, were you lost to us, would give before he promised.
وَقَدand indeed قَصَدتُكَI sought you out وَالتَرحالُand departure مُقتَرِبٌnear
وَالدارُand home شاسِعَةٌfar away وَالزادُand provisions قَدalready نَفِداhave run out
And I have sought you out, with departure drawing near,
I have come to you, though the journey nears its end
I have sought you out as the time of departure draws near,
and home far away, and provisions already exhausted.
The house is spacious, but provisions are spent
With my home far distant and my provisions consumed.
فَخَلِّso let كَفَّكَyour palm تَهميpour forth وَاِثنِand restrain وابِلَهاits downpour
إِذاwhen اِكتَفَيتُI have had enough وَإِلّاand if not أَغرَقَit would flood البَلَداthe land
So let your palm pour forth, and restrain its downpour
So open your hand, let bounty rain down
So let your hand pour forth, but restrain its heavy rain
when I have had enough; otherwise it would flood the land.
When I've had my fill, else it will drown the land
Once I am sufficed—or else it will drown the land.
