رِضاكَyour pleasure رِضايَmy pleasure الَّذيwhich أوثِرُI prefer
وَسِرُّكَand your secret سِرّيmy secret فَماso not أُظهِرُI disclose
Your pleasure is the pleasure I prefer for myself;
Your pleasure is my pleasure that I prefer
Your pleasure is my pleasure, the choice I prefer above all,
And your secret is mine, so I do not disclose it.
And your secret is my secret that I do not reveal
And your secret is my secret, which I never reveal.
كَفَتكَhas shielded you المُروأَةُhonor ماwhat تَتَّقيyou guard against
وَآمَنَكَand has made you safe الوُدُّaffection ماwhat تَحذَرُyou fear
Honor has shielded you from what you guard against,
Your fairness has sufficed what you fear
Your chivalry suffices to guard against what you fear,
And affection has made you safe from what you fear.
And your love has secured what you dread
And your friendship secures you from all that you dread.
وَسِرُّكُمُand your (plural) secret فيin الحَشاthe breast مَيِّتٌdead
إِذاwhen أُنشِرَis raised to life السِرُّthe secret لاnot يُنشَرُis raised to life
And your secret is dead within my breast;
Your secret with me is dead in the tomb
Your secret lies dead within the depths of my heart;
When secrets are raised to life, yours is not.
Once the secret is revealed, it is not concealed
Though other secrets be resurrected, this one shall not rise.
كَأَنّيas though I عَصَتdisobeyed مُقلَتيmy eye فيكُمُconcerning you (plural)
وَكاتَمَتِand concealed from القَلبَthe heart ماwhat تُبصِرُit sees
It is as though my eye defied me concerning you,
It's as if my eyelid disobeyed about you
It is as if my eyes have disobeyed me regarding you,
And concealed from my heart what it sees.
And my heart concealed what it sees
And have concealed from my own heart what they behold.
وَإِفشاءُand disclosing ماwhat أَناI مُستَودَعٌentrusted with
مِنَof الغَدرِtreachery وَالحُرِّand a noble man لاnot يَغدِرُbetrays
And disclosing what I am entrusted with
Revealing what I safeguard
For to divulge that with which I have been entrusted
Is treachery, and a noble man does not betray.
Is a betrayal and sin that does not betray
Is an act of treachery, and the noble do not betray.
إِذاif ماemphatic particle قَدَرتُI am capable عَلىof نَطقَةٍan utterance
فَإِنّيthen indeed I عَلىof تَركِهاleaving it unspoken أَقدَرُmore capable
If I am able to utter a word,
When I am able to utter a word
If I possess the power to utter a single word,
Then I am still more able to leave it unspoken.
I am more able to refrain from it
Then I am far more capable of leaving it unsaid.
أُصَرِّفُI direct نَفسيmy soul كَماas أَشتَهيI wish
وَأَملِكُهاand I master it وَالقَناand the spears أَحمَرُred
I direct my soul as I wish,
I maneuver myself as I wish
I govern my own soul exactly as I desire,
And master it while the spears are red.
And control it while the spear is red
And I am its master, even when the spears are red.
دَواليكَvictory after victory for you ياO سَيفَهاits sword دَولَةًthe state
وَأَمرَكَand your command ياO خَيرَbest مَنof those who يَأمُرُcommand
Yours be victory after victory, O Sword of the State,
Your affairs, O sword of it, have ups and downs
May fortune serve you in turns, O Sword of the Realm,
And I obey your command, O best of those who command.
And your matter, O best advisor, commands
And yours is the command, O best of those who rule.
أَتانيcame to me رَسولُكَyour messenger مُستَعجِلاًurging haste
فَلَبّاهُso it answered him شِعريmy verse الَّذيwhich أَذخَرُI hold in reserve
Your messenger came to me, urging haste,
Your messenger came to me in haste
Your messenger arrived before me in urgent haste,
So my verse, which I hold in reserve, answered him.
So my poetry, which I hoard, answered him
So my verse, which I hoard like treasure, answered him.
وَلَوand if كانَhad been يَومَa day وَغىًof battle قاتِماًdark
لَلَبّاهُwould surely have answered him سَيفِيَmy sword وَالأَشقَرُand the chestnut steed
And had it been a dark day of battle,
And if it were a dark day of calamity
And had it been a gloomy day of war and dust,
My sword and the chestnut steed would have answered him.
My sword and blade would have answered him
My sword and my sorrel steed would have answered him.
فَلاso may ... not غَفَلَbe heedless الدَهرُTime عَنof أَهلِهِits people
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you عَينٌan eye بِهاwith it يَنظُرُit sees
So may Time never be heedless of its people,
Time does not neglect its people
So let not Time be heedless of its noble kin,
For you are the eye through which it sees.
For you are an eye through which it sees
For you are the very eye by which the Age sees.
