وَأَخٍAnd a friend لَناof ours بَعَثَsent الطَلاقَdivorce أَلِيَّةًas an oath
وَأَخٍ لَنا بَعَثَ الطَلاقَ أَلِيَّةً
لَأُعَلِّلَنَّI shall surely take solace بِهَذِهِwith this الخُرطومِwine
لَأُعَلِّلَنَّ بِهَذِهِ الخُرطومِ
And a friend of ours sent divorce as an oath,
A brother of ours dispatched divorce
A friend of ours staked divorce upon an oath,
That I would surely take solace in this wine.
I will explain with this trunk
That I must surely soothe my spirit with this wine;
فَجَعَلتُSo I made رَدّيmy restoring عِرسَهُhis wife كَفّارَةًan expiation
فَجَعَلتُ رَدّي عِرسَهُ كَفّارَةً
عَنfor شُربِهاdrinking it وَشَرِبتُand I drank غَيرَwithout being أَثيمِsinful
عَن شُربِها وَشَرِبتُ غَيرَ أَثيمِ
So I made my restoring his wife to him an expiation
So I made my refusal his wedding present
So I made the restoring of his wife my expiation
For drinking it, and I drank without sin.
For drinking it, while I drank with no blame
For the draught, and thus I drank—devoid of sin.
