قال الحمار يريد رأي الثعلبِ

قال الحمار يريد رأي الثعلبِ

لمَ لستُ أُحظى في الوحوش بمنصبِ؟

لمَ لستُ أُحظى في الوحوش بمنصبِ؟

The donkey spoke, seeking the fox’s opinion:

The donkey said, wanting the fox's opinion:

“Why am I not granted a post among the beasts?

Why am I not honored among the beasts with a position?

أغدو و أمسي في يديَّ زمامهم

أغدو و أمسي في يديَّ زمامهم

و سرورهم همّي يكون و مذهبي

و سرورهم همّي يكون و مذهبي

Morning and evening, their reins would be in my hands,

I spend night and day holding their reins,

and their happiness would be my concern and my guiding principle.”

And their happiness is my concern and purpose.

فأجابه:أخشى و أنت محكَّمٌ

فأجابه:أخشى و أنت محكَّمٌ

برقابنا أن تستحيل بمخلبِ

برقابنا أن تستحيل بمخلبِ

So he answered: “I fear that, once you have power

over our necks, you will become a creature with a claw.

Control our necks, you may grow claws

فتصير تحسب نفسك الأذكى و من

فتصير تحسب نفسك الأذكى و من

جهل النهيق تعده أغبى غبي

جهل النهيق تعده أغبى غبي

Then you will think yourself the cleverest, and anyone who

And think yourself the wisest, and consider

knows nothing of braying you will deem the stupidest of fools.

The braying of ignorance to be the greatest folly,

و نصير نحيا في ظروف صعبة

و نصير نحيا في ظروف صعبة

ما عندنا أمل سوى في المهرب

ما عندنا أمل سوى في المهرب

And we will come to live in difficult circumstances,

And we may live in dire straits,

with no hope except in escape.”

With no hope left but escape.
