I spend the night burdened by worry, hoping for its relief.

And I know I am like everyone else in this.

And if not, show me one whose time has sewn

His robe for him from peace of mind, or woven it.

  3. ***

    ***

    Yesterday he was a fighter,

The spirit of dignity alive within him.

And today he has become a deceiver,

    ***

And he may well have sold the cause.

    ***

Yes, verse glories in beauty, finding

Its substance in the uplifting of humankind.

To me, poetry is pride and dignity,

Not merely an utterance fashioned to meters.

And I love it fluent, pleasing in eloquence

And strength, and likewise sweet in expression.

Indeed, I see beautiful poetry as eloquence

    That elevates taste—not a tongue's inarticulacy.

  10. ***

    ***

I have sworn to pay no heed

To rabble whose clever ones are beasts.

They do not honor pledges, out of folly,

And among them, covenants are not respected.
