I see the days—each day there appears

To us, from their affairs, a wondrous marvel.

So here is Baqil, now an orator,

And speech has betrayed Sahban's tongue.

And a nightingale was gagged so it would not sing,

And the crow was granted permission in its stead.

Until a wise man died of grief,

And the balance of affairs was in disarray.

And among the things that made the firewood burn more fiercely

Was the silence of the wise about what deserved reproach.

So ugliness became the rule, and now,

Whenever it calls, its summons is answered.

So this is poetry, in defiance of poetry itself,

Even if it belongs to prose.

And that is a poem, although to

Poetry's question it has no answer.

The logic of things among us was harmed,

So an upheaval brought concepts to ruin.

Ugliness rules a society and runs rampant

When estrangement befalls beauty within it.
