فقهوتي بجوارها تتعطرُ

I lay the poem on the breakfast table;

so my coffee beside it grows fragrant,

و مذاق جبني

و مذاق جبني

يرتقي طعما

يرتقي طعما

and the flavor of my cheese

grows finer in taste,

و خبزي

و خبزي

من أصالة نبضها يتأثرُ

من أصالة نبضها يتأثرُ

and my bread

is touched by the authenticity of its pulse.

أضع القصيدة فوق مائدتي

فيصبح كل مأكول و مشروب عوالمَ

فيصبح كل مأكول و مشروب عوالمَ

I lay the poem on my table,

so all food and drink become worlds

بالمعاني تزخرُ .

ذبُل النــــــوم على أجفانه

من فراقٍ طالما خاف لِقاهُ

Sleep withered on his eyelids

from a parting he had long feared to face.

عاش لا يشرب همّا عُمْرَهٌ

عاش لا يشرب همّا عُمْرَهٌ

لكِنِ الدهرَ به اليومَ سقاهُ

لكِنِ الدهرَ به اليومَ سقاهُ

He lived his whole life without drinking sorrow,

but today Time made him drink it.

ينام الخليّ الليلَ مـــلءَ جفـونه

ينام الخليّ الليلَ مـــلءَ جفـونه

**

The carefree man sleeps through the night, his eyelids full of sleep,

و ذو الهم لا يغفــو بوخْز البلابلِ*

و ذو الهم لا يغفــو بوخْز البلابلِ*

يسامر نجـما طال في الليل لبْثُه

يسامر نجـما طال في الليل لبْثُه

while the careworn does not doze under the sting of anguish.*

He converses with a star that has lingered long in the night,

إلى قوله: ذا النجمُ ليس براحِلِ

إلى قوله: ذا النجمُ ليس براحِلِ

until he says: "This star is not leaving."
