كلevery جرحٍwound يهونُgrows easier فيin الحمْلbearing إلاexcept
جرحَthe wound مَنone who منكَfrom you نالَهreached him إحسانُkindness
Every wound grows easier to bear, except
the wound dealt by one who has received kindness from you.
فلهذاso, for this reason عضَّbit الكريمthe generous man يديْهhis two hands
وand دعَاهُurged him كيto يبخلَbe miserly الكُفرانُingratitude
Thus the generous man bit both his hands,
and ingratitude urged him to be miserly.

I realized that my faults had done me good

when I contented myself with them and guarded my tongue.
Far be it from me to fault my brother while I have faults;
لوif عبْتُهI faulted him وby اللهِGod كنتُI would be الْجانيthe offender

بمظلتيunder my umbrella أناI أستظلُّtake shade
إذfor تحتهاbeneath it ليfor me الظلُّthe shade يحلوis sweet
Under my own umbrella I take shade,
for beneath it the shade is sweet to me.
وand منِwhoever استعارborrowed مظلّةًan umbrella
فيin الشعرِpoetry لمdid not ينفعْهُbenefit him ظلُّshade
And whoever borrows an umbrella
in poetry gains no benefit from its shade.
