That beautiful age has passed, yet still there lingers

its echo, by which we go forth at dawn and return at dusk.

We held the earth’s reins through justice and strength,

and resolve and ambition of our own made us lords.

    نحرّم فيها ما نرى و نبيحُ

    Then the world placed the reins of its affairs in our hands;

therein we forbade and permitted as we saw fit.

And here we are today, hostages to division,

while a wind toys with us in helplessness’s wasteland,

until we imagined happiness itself our foe,

and that, among all peoples, it shunned us.

And now the sons of Zion have wreaked ruin in Jerusalem,

and because of them Jerusalem is filled with sorrows and wounds.

And in the Golan’s body there still lies a pasture for them,

lamenting what has befallen it and wailing.

By God, O sword of Arabdom, tell us:

when will you topple the heads of tyranny?
