    I counsel you:

Do not write your life story on paper

whose inner whiteness you do not trust.

    Then take off your sandals

while you trace your feet on the shore,

so the tide may spell you out when it passes over the sand, kissing it.

And cast your finest greeting upon the waves,

so they may tell their flocks of gulls

that you suckle from the breast of sanctity,

that you venture deep into rarity,

that you are of gold's lineage,

refusing to dwell in the cities of apostasy,

that you are what remains of the age of the rosy dream,

and that you do not allow the farce to pass

over the bridge of our skulls.

And finally, I counsel you not to rely on silence,

    for jerboas dwell in silence,

and the hyenas of broken time sleep there.

    And help your opinion

climb to the summit of a lofty mountain,

    and remain in its company,

    and beware of leaving it,

for only cowards abandon their opinions.
