and drink a memory with its sweetness.
It softens the misery of the moment,
تخرجنيtakes me out منof دائرةthe circle of الأوهامillusions،
تخرجني من دائرة الأوهام،
أرانيI see myself أحملbearing همthe burden of الأرthe earth (first part of split word) ضfinal part of the split word ‘earth’
أراني أحمل هم الأر ض
taking me out of the circle of illusions.
I see myself bearing the earth’s burden,
كأنas though شراعthe sail of الأرضthe earth لهit has ولعa passion برياحيfor my winds

ويسيل لمرآه لعاب الساسة .

طموحيmy ambition كبيرgreat لاnot تنامsleep جفونهits eyelids
طموحي كبير لا تنام جفونه

و لي همة تسعى و لا تعرف التعبْ
My ambition is great; its eyelids do not sleep,
and I have a resolve that strives and knows no weariness.
تعاكسنيoppose me الأيامthe days إنif رمتI seek مرتقىa height
تعاكسني الأيام إن رمت مرتقى
فأرقىso I climb أريهاI show them أننيthat I am نافذsuccessful in الطلبthe pursuit
فأرقى أريها أنني نافذ الطلب
The days oppose me if I seek a height,
yet I climb, showing them that I succeed in my pursuit.

علمتنيhave taught me الأيامُthe days أنthat لاnot أباليI care
علمتني الأيامُ أن لا أبالي

The days have taught me not to care
إنif أصابتنيstrike me منfrom صديقٍa friend سهامُarrows
إن أصابتني من صديقٍ سهامُ
بيدyet أنيthat I منهagainst him أحصّنI fortify نفسيmyself
بيد أني منه أحصّن نفسي
if arrows from a friend strike me.
Yet I fortify myself against him,
كيso that لهfor him فيهاwithin it لاnot يكونmay be مقامُan abode
كي له فيها لا يكون مقامُ
so that he may have no abode within me.
