I watch the days; each day there appears

To us, from their affairs, a wonder beyond wonder.

So here is Baqil, now an orator,

And speech has betrayed Sahban's tongue.

And a nightingale was gagged so it would not sing,

And the crow was granted permission in its stead.

Until a wise man died of anguish,

And the scales of affairs were in disarray.

And among the things that made the firewood blaze more fiercely

Was the silence of the wise about what deserved censure.

So ugliness became the rule, and now

Whenever it calls, its call is answered.

So this is poetry, in defiance of poetry itself,

Even if its kinship is with prose.

And that is a poem, although to

The question of poetry it has no answer.

The logic of things among us has suffered,

So an upheaval swept concepts away.

Ugliness dominates a society and runs rampant

When estrangement befalls beauty within it.
