رأيت النت بالشعراء عاجّا
وand فيin ردهاتهits halls قلّwas scarce القريضُpoetry
و في ردهاته قلّ القريضُ
I saw the internet teeming with poets,
And in its halls, poetry was scarce.
بهon it كثرwere numerous الأطبَّةُthe doctors ليتif only شعريmy knowledge
به كثر الأطبَّةُ ليت شعري
وand لكنyet بينهمamong them يشقىsuffers المريضُthe patient
و لكن بينهم يشقى المريضُ
Doctors abounded there—I wonder!
Yet among them the patient suffers.

السرُّthe secret إنif أوْدعتَهyou entrust it غربالاa sieve
السرُّ إن أوْدعتَه غربالا

A secret, if you entrust it to a sieve,
فيin لحظةa moment طافtraveled through البلادَthe lands وand جالاroamed
في لحظة طاف البلادَ و جالا
كمhow many هالكٍone who perished فمُهhis mouth لهto him جلبbrought الردىdeath
كم هالكٍ فمُه له جلب الردى
In a moment, travels the lands and roams.
How many a man has perished, his mouth bringing him death—
لمdid not يُلْقِpay ساعةَat the moment أنthat تكلمَhe spoke بالاheed
لم يُلْقِ ساعةَ أن تكلمَ بالا

He paid no heed at the moment he spoke.

يقضيspend الخلائقpeople صيفهمtheir summer فيon عطلةholiday
يقضي الخلائق صيفهم في عطلة
وقضاءand spending صيفيmy summer بينamong أحضانembracing arms الأدبْliterature
وقضاء صيفي بين أحضان الأدبْ
People spend their summer on holiday,
And my summer is spent in literature's embrace.
إنيindeed I إذاwhen ماemphatic particle فاتنيpassed me by وقتsome time ولمand did not
إني إذا ما فاتني وقت ولم
أقرأI read كتاباa book قامbegan يأخذنيto seize me العجبastonishment
أقرأ كتابا قام يأخذني العجب
Indeed, whenever some time passes me by and I have not
Read a book, astonishment begins to seize me.
