لولا محيّاك والقوام

لولا محيّاك والقوام

لم يخلق الوجد والغرام

لم يخلق الوجد والغرام

Were it not for your countenance and stature,

Were it not for your face and stature,

Longing and passion would never have been created;

longing and passion would not have been created,

ولا أناخ الهوى بقلب

ولا أناخ الهوى بقلب

ولا جفا جفنه المنام

ولا جفا جفنه المنام

Nor would love have alighted in a heart,

nor would love have knelt within a heart,

Nor would sleep have shunned his eyelid;

nor would sleep have forsaken his eyelid,

ولا غدى مصطفاك رقاً

ولا غدى مصطفاك رقاً

ولا كسا جسمه السقام

ولا كسا جسمه السقام

Nor would your Mustafa have become a slave,

nor would your Mustafa have become a slave,

Nor would illness have clothed his body.

nor would sickness have clothed his body.

وكيف يسلو هواك صب

وكيف يسلو هواك صب

حياه من ثغرك ابتسام

حياه من ثغرك ابتسام

How could one infatuated with you forget your love,

And how can a lovesick lover forget his love for you,

When a smile from your mouth greeted him?

whom a smile from your lips has greeted?

يا جامع الحسن ما لعيني

يا جامع الحسن ما لعيني

سواك يا قبلتي إمام

سواك يا قبلتي إمام

O you who gather all beauty, my eyes have

O gatherer of beauty, my eye has no

No imam but you, O my qibla.

prayer-leader but you, O my qibla.

مولاي قد عز عنك صبري

مولاي قد عز عنك صبري

وهزَّني الوجد والهيام

وهزَّني الوجد والهيام

My lord, patience away from you is beyond me,

My lord, I can scarcely endure being apart from you,

And longing and passion have shaken me.

and longing and love's frenzy have shaken me.

فانظر بعين الرضا لعبد

فانظر بعين الرضا لعبد

يرضيه من أنسك الكلام

يرضيه من أنسك الكلام

Look, then, with the eye of favor upon a servant

So look with an eye of favor upon a servant

Whom conversation in your company would content.

who is content with your friendly conversation.

فلا سها والسهاد حظ

فلا سها والسهاد حظ

من لحظه والورى نيام

من لحظه والورى نيام

Thus he never grows heedless—sleeplessness is the lot

For he has never grown heedless, and sleeplessness is the lot

Of whoever beholds him, while all creation sleeps.

of his eye, while humankind sleeps.
