فتنbewitched الأنامhumankind بخدّهwith his cheek ولهيبهand its flame
فتن الأنام بخدّه ولهيبه
قمرa moon يضعفdoubles ذكرهmention of him ولهيmy passion بهfor him
قمر يضعف ذكره ولهي به
He bewitched humankind with his cheek and its flame.
His cheek allures people and sets them ablaze,
A moon whose mention doubles my passion for him.
A moon whose radiance outshines all praise.
وبماand to what أشبِّهshall I liken حسنهhis loveliness وجمالهand his beauty
وبما أشبِّه حسنه وجماله
وبدائعand the marvels التشبيهof simile شأنthe province of معيبهhis detractor
وبدائع التشبيه شأن معيبه
And to what shall I liken his loveliness and beauty,
What can I compare his beauty and grace to?
when wondrous similes are the province of his detractor?
All similes would diminish his noble face.
