وأهيَفٍand a slender youth كالغصنlike a branch لماwhen رأىhe saw
تصاعدthe rising الأنفاسthe breaths منfrom حرقيmy burning anguish
And a slender youth, like a branch, when he saw
Slender like a branch when he saw
Breaths rising from my burning anguish,
My smoldering breaths rise
ناولنيhe handed me منfrom يدهhis hand وردةa rose
كأنهاas though it were منfrom خدهhis cheek المشرقيradiant
Handed me a rose from his hand,
He handed me a rose
As though it came from his radiant cheek,
As if plucked from his radiant cheek
لكيso that يظنmight think الناسthe people منout of جهلهمtheir ignorance
بأنهاthat they were أنفاسbreaths منتشقِone inhaling a fragrance

So people would think in their ignorance
That they were the breaths of one inhaling its fragrance.
That it was but a whiff I had taken
