يا ناس قد فهم العبارة
Would that Ishaq al-Samarah,
O Isaac Al-Samarah
O people, had understood the phrase,
O people who understood my words

وسقى وسقى وانتشى

وأَعار هذا الكأس جاره
And poured and poured and grown tipsy,
He drank and drank and was refreshed
And lent this cup to his neighbor.
And lent this cup to his neighbor

يوماً تحل له العبارة
Perhaps the pure wine, and what it holds,
A time will come when words make sense to him
Will one day unravel the phrase for him.

The borrowed robes of youth.

But despite the universe's disdain
Nor will I head the ministry.

Shall remain the emblem of piety,
My soul is like my cup, devoid
And live as the emblem of purity.

From the blossoms of lofty Gilead,

And from the hills of that beacon.

And beware the fire's lost one—a sign.
