What is bean-brewed coffee, if compared with a clear draught

Of wine from Gilead, with its damp peaks,

Passed around by a maiden from among the people's daughters,

Who gives me drink from her cup and from her glances,

In the shade of a tent with frail ropes and an overhang,

Shabby and lowly, like its poor inhabitants,

You would have known neither a trace nor a ruin of it,

Nor would its name have been worthy of recording.

And put your piety on a shelf for a while.

For their sighs are magic, and their gathering

Is poetry, and their melodies, O sheikh, stir my longing.

Spare me seriousness, while the days are jesting.

Do not hurry your steps, for life moves at ease.

Each year here in Ghor Nimrin.

And indeed our summer retreat, in every scorching summer,

Is the hill-country of Ibbin's plain, year after year.

O Hamza al-Arabi, people live in plenty,

And in bliss, though it is not guaranteed.

But a kohl-eyed maiden among their wide-eyed houris.

What do I care about prices in Aleppo,

And the wealth of merchants in Palestine,

And the grinding conflict of Syrian parties

    Over labels—what wretched labels!

Are not Wadi al-Shita's fawns dusky,

And the cheek of Jordan's daughter anemone-red,

And the eryngo of Wadi al-Hawr in leaf,

    And the gundelia of Shi'b al-Za'tari dark-hued,

As a faith? Ah, what a splendid faith, O sheikh!

    God bless Qa'war, a wine-seller whose disposition

Was fashioned from kindness, friendliness, and gentleness.
