What have I to do with Barfin, O lovers of Barfin?

Separation has taken the place of our closeness.

And gray hair has replaced the dreams of youth with piety.

And our estrangement has replaced the sweetness of our meetings.

I am, as I said, one whose ardor has grown threadbare,

And one who has retired, with neither worldly life nor religion.

So the maidens of Wadi al-Sir do not remember me,

Nor the budding-breasted maidens in Ajloun’s outskirts.

Youth has turned—its freshness I wore away

In whatever gave me full access to them—

    ووصلهن استحال اليوم غسلينا

    Into the ascetic devotion I have found myself attempting;

And union with them has today turned to hell’s pus.

I had thought I would remain a brother to rapture,

Even if I passed ninety, O nephew.

One does not attain everything one desires.

So be gentle with my heart, for I have become wretched.

And greet on my behalf, as alms you yourself offer,

For youth, the maiden of purity, Barfin.

And recite our words within her hearing:

Indeed, we greet you, O Barfin; greet us.

Perhaps the frenzy of love that I once knew

In bygone days will visit our gathering today,

Then longing may touch my heart in its corners,

    And my soul may find comfort in passion in our midst;

And our companions may be spared our seeking their help,

If the situation demands that we weep and they weep for us.

Love has forsaken us, so it no longer takes an interest in us,

And beauty has found us repulsive, so it no longer draws near us.
