مالي وللبان والزوراء والعلم
والبرقand the lightning يومضflashes بالعلياءin the heights منfrom أضمIdam
والبرق يومض بالعلياء من أضم
What have I to do with al-Ban, al-Zawra, and al-Alam,
What business have I with Banu and Zawra'a
And the lightning flashing in the heights from Idam?
And the flag flashing in 'Aliya from behind the sandhills,
جيرانneighbors واديvalley of الشتاal-Shita ياO ناسpeople أبغضهمthe most hated of them
جيران وادي الشتا يا ناس أبغضهم
أحبdearer للقلبto the heart منthan جيرانneighbors ذيDhi (possessor of) سلمSalam
أحب للقلب من جيران ذي سلم
The neighbors of Wadi al-Shita—O people, even the most hated among them—
The neighbors of Wadi as-Sita - how I hate them!
Are dearer to the heart than the neighbors of Dhi Salam.
I love most the heart's neighbors with peace.
وماءand the water of راحوبRahub انwhether تصفوit runs clear وإنand whether كدرتit became turbid
وماء راحوب ان تصفو وإن كدرت
تظلit remains أعذبsweetest ماءwater سائغpleasant to drink بفميin my mouth
تظل أعذب ماء سائغ بفمي
And Rahub’s water, whether clear or turbid,
Though the waters of Rachoub run pure or stir mud,
Remains the sweetest water, pleasing in my mouth.
Still are they the sweetest to drink that my mouth has known.
