They say, 'Repent of her.' I shall surely repent;
They say repent from her, and I will repent
And, when my Lord wills, I shall turn back to Him.
If my Lord wills, I will turn back

وللرشدand to right guidance بعدafter الغيstraying سوفwill أثوبI return
Then I shall disown my drinking companions and abandon my tavern,
Yet I deny my regret, and abandon my love
And after straying, I shall return to the right path.
And after being lost, I will return to reason

And I shall lower my gaze if before it appear
I will turn a blind eye, if her beauty appears before me
The charms of that delicate, playful beauty.
Charming and playful, yet chaste

And keep putting off those who said, 'Arar has mended his ways;
They say I am blinded by passion
And whoever turns back after straying is wise.'
But who finds reason after being misguided?

They say be content with what you have done
For a reckless man and a discerning one are not alike.'
For the reckless and doubtful are not equal

I adjure you by Wadi al-Shita and its gazelles,
I call to witness the valley of flowers and its gazelles
And the gazelles of beloved Wadi al-Sir:
And the deer of the valley of travel, which is my love

Without consuming love and a cup of wine,
Without fervent love, and a cup of wine
And a plaintive melody—how, how can my soul be content?
How can there be sweet melody?

It called me—and can gray hair disobey youth?
She called me, though youth does not obey old age

And I, even if I should live beyond eighty years,
Even if I performed pilgrimage eighty times
Would surely answer the summons of love's ardent longings.
I would still answer the call of the passions of youth

Bearing scars from the agonies of passionate love.
Marked with wounds of obsession

يقولونthey say عنيabout me إنif خلاكleft you وجيبa heartbeat
Is a man anything but his two smallest parts—heart and tongue? What might
Is not man always his younger self?
they say of me if no heartbeat remained in you?
What will they say of me if I leave you?
