People—what are people? Slaves of power; they endure

what a mount endures from a fearless warrior’s spur.

They send to him who subjected them to humiliation and burdened them

with oppression, greetings of reverence and esteem.

And with their hands they braid, for the one who severs them,

out of zeal for oppression, two laurel wreaths.

Fools, they follow—as individuals and as a society,

and as a nation and as peoples—every current.

And they hold their noses high, trained

to wallow at a tyrant’s thresholds.

So let no sharpened fangs deceive you,

clashing in rage over some passing, unexpected affair.

For the monkey, among their bearers, guards its domain better

when defending a home on a day of terror.

People are companions of whoever’s good fortune lasts,

be he a little rabbit or a ferocious, maned beast.

And people are like the winecup: their affection has never brought

to one faithful to them anything but harm.
