People have spoken; spare me their talk,

and the rumors spread by those recounting my affairs.

For the oud, however artful its player may be,

lacks the rabab’s plaintiveness for the passing listener.

Nor is there, in my spending a night drunk

among the tents and drinking companions, any shame.

Among the tents, my life is not squandered in vain,

nor does guidance lose patience with my ways.

Nor does al-Habr see any harm in drinking with me,

nor does Qaʿwari in drinking a glass of cognac.

Indeed, freedom does not mean standing on

a lofty brink—but its cliff is... [final word incomplete].
