    Pass it round, O cupbearer,

    Without worry or disturbance.

And make it Nowruz for us—God preserve you—

Let our Nowruz revels be in full swing.

    And tell the custodian responsible

For my choice possessions and my treasures:

Come now, who will buy my books,

And who will purchase my papers,

For a bowl of tawny wine

    Whose weight exhausts the cupbearer?

    For study has burdened me,

By my life, with ways not my own,

And the pursuit of knowledge has made me

    A great scholar of destitution.

And the cup is what I praise

When my horizons close in on me,

And they are poised to clutch—

The turns of my days—at my throat.

Pass it round; heed no rumor-mongering

Of a braggart and a swindler,

    Nor a liar's commentary

    On a habitual liar's fabrications.

For it does not harm my sandal strap,

    Nor disturb my lowered gaze:

    Their calling me a drunkard

    Or a wanderer through marketplaces.

While they range from a spy

To a wrongdoer and a thief,

And a two-faced man who has thwarted

The healer's spells with his brazenness.

    Pass it round, O cupbearer,

    Pass it round, O cupbearer.

For it does not harm my sandal strap,

    Nor disturb my lowered gaze:

    Their leader's words about me,

    In arrogance and exaggeration:

    ‘The drunken poet's talk

Gives me no cause for concern.’

And pay no heed to thunder,

    Nor take notice of lightning.

    And tell Hamza al-Arabi:

Do not go too far in tormenting me,

For the penalty for drinking wine, however harsh,

Is flogging a pampered, refined man.
