My two friends, the tormented heart has never ceased
My beloved, my tormented heart cannot stop
to thrill at the nightly visits of the Circassian women's phantom.
Thrilling at the fluttering of Circassian specters,

And the soul you both knew
Nor can the soul I've known stop,
in youth has never ceased to trail the hem of its ardent longings.
That used to haul the train of youth in the past.

And my heart, as it was yesterday, remains unruly;
And my heart, as yesterday, cannot stop, storming,
passion toys with it, and love's torments play upon it.
Playing with passion there, and flirting.

So one day, in Wadi al-Sir, a gazelle beguiles it;
One day it likens me, in the valley of travel, to a gazelle,
and another day, in this port, a herd of gazelles beguiles it.
Another day, to this cheek, it likens me to a twittering bird.

So let such a heart perish: whenever I say it has found solace,
If I said a heart once serene,
longings wrestle with it until it belies my words.
When desires pulled it this way and that until it lied,

If the wide eyes let it escape, it is pierced
Was not a heart, when eyes unleashed it,
by the bloodied nail of henna-stained fingers.
Their bloody talons sank into it, staining it red.

My two friends, the daughter of light has bridled her young she-camel
My beloved, the light's daughter pitched her tent,
and departed to set in the horizons of deep darkness.
And the horizon of my yearning darkened as she disappeared.

And your young man was worn out by a day and a night spent
Your absence one day and night has sapped
on the pale camels, where no shoulder gave the hip comfort.
My strength − no rest for my shoulder's joint from you.

My two friends, the treasures of sorrow awaken sorrow,
My beloved, the fetters of sorrow wake sorrow,
and tears mend some of the heart's cracks.
And some heartbreak can be mended with tears.

Halt with us; let us drain the eye of tears
Standing, we drain the eyes with weeping
over the desolate campsite—a rain-laden cloud pouring down.
Over the desolate, unlit ruins where darkness pours.

ونلحوand we blame تصاريفthe vicissitudes of اللياليthe nights ونعتبand we reproach
And turn aside to the ruins, that we may pay them their due,
Askance, at the vestiges, we pay what we owe,
and blame the nights' vicissitudes and voice our reproach.
Trace the twists of nights, and complain.

And tell the deserted dwelling-traces what afflicts us;
We blame the firm ordinances that drove us apart,
perhaps, just perhaps, voicing our grief will carry sorrow away.
Hoping that bare lament might sweep them away.

And coax the rubble to speak—the rubble of Adhruh,
We give voice to the rubble, rubble of love,
where echoes murmur and owls have a place to hoot.
Echoing the owl's hoot, the jackal's howl.
