My Layla, my Layla, time has made us wretched.
My nights, my nights, time has caused us so much grief,
And glory has exhausted us, and longing has worn us down.
Glory has exhausted us, and passion has worn us down.

My Layla, my Layla, our fortune has taken flight,
My nights, my nights, our vitality is long gone,
from prolonged anguish—would that anguish had never been!
From enduring so much hardship, if only there was no agony.

O abodes of ill omen, our newly acquired wealth has been destroyed,
O four harbingers of ill fate that has led to our demise,
along with our ancestral wealth, by an age that has defied us.
Along with the passage of time that has challenged us.

We have suffered calamity because fortune has thwarted us
We were stricken with grief for fortune turned against us,
and allied itself with those people, the bandits of Haganah.
And the people that attacked us were granted success.

People have been given what they wished for and desired;
People were given what they desired and craved,
as for calamities, they were our gifts.
Yet afflictions were bestowed upon us as gifts.

Whoever thought the Arabs would ever deceive them,

You'd think they were brothers to the Arabs.

We come to you when time oppresses us.

Seeking you out as our riding beasts grew weary.

For after Allah today you are our refuge.

We've had enough of the people's false pledges,

Deceiving the nomads in various cunning ways.

From the day of Hittin until now and forevermore.

If only our leaders kept the promises they made,

Things would not have turned out as they did, my lord.

But now sorrow and tears have been awakened in us.
