My fear for the Arabs is of a people who mislead them;
My fear for the Arabs from a people who mislead them
Their names point to non-Arab origins.
Their names originally point to non-Arabs

Like Ibn Khaqan in an age past and gone,
Like Ibn Khagan from an era past and gone
And like Ibn Barmak—so understand me—are their rulers.
And Ibn Barmak, so understand me and do not blame

وليس للعرب من هذا من الكلم
For it is not among the Arabs,
For there is not among the Arabs
Nor does any of this speech belong to the Arabs.
Nor is there for the Arabs any share of this speech

واحرص وإن غيروا الأسماء من ندم
Leave them, and you yourself turn away from them as one who loves.
Leave them be and do not incline towards them with any shred of love
And take care, even if they change their names out of remorse.
And be vigilant though they change their names in regret
