أفيis there in كلevery يومday منزلa stopping-place ورحيلand a departure
وقالand talk بهby it ذرعاًendurance تضيقyou grow weary وقيلand gossip
Must every day bring a stopping-place and a departure,
Every day, another home and another leaving,
And talk and gossip that strain your endurance,
My days narrow and my life fills with sorrow.
وعمرand a lifetime كأحلامlike the dreams of اليتيمthe orphan كآبةin gloom
وعيشand a living كجدوىlike the bounty of المسنتينthe famine-stricken هزيلmeagre
And a lifetime as gloomy as an orphan’s dreams,
My youth fades like an orphan's fleeting dreams,
And a living as meagre as the bounty of the famine-stricken?
My existence frail as a worn out pair of sandals.
عفاhas become desolate القلبthe heart إلاexcept منfor تباريحthe torments of وجدهits longing
وأقوتand became deserted عراصthe courtyards of النفسthe soul فهيso they are طلولruins
The heart lies desolate, save for the torments of its longing,
My heart finds peace only in rememberings of past affection,
And the soul’s courtyards lie deserted: they are ruins.
I feed my soul memories to ease its hunger.
فماso there is no للعشياتto the evenings التيthat منيتwere afflicted بهاby them
لياليهits nights فيin سهلthe plain of العريفal-‘Arif سبيلa way
So there is no way back to the evenings that befell
Yet those nights I spent in the valley of al-Arifeen
Its nights on the plain of al-‘Arif.
Still cannot find their way back to me.
فياso, oh حبذاhow delightful منfrom ماءthe water of راحوبRahub رشفةa sip
وظلand shade بجرعاءon the sandy ground of السريجal-Surayj ظليلsheltering
Oh, how delightful a sip of Rahub’s water would be,
How I wish again for the sweet water of Ráhob,
And sheltering shade on the sandy ground of al-Surayj,
And shade beneath the palms of al-Sarijeh.
وفيand in دارthe house of قسيسthe priest of القريةthe village ليلةa night
تقضىto be spent وفيand in حضنthe embrace of الصريحal-Sarih مقيلa midday rest
And in the village priest’s house, a night
For a night in the village priest's abode
To be spent, and a midday rest in al-Sarih’s embrace.
Where I'd sleep embracing the scripture's binding.
