قولهم للإثم إثم فيه غبن
I do not claim certainty, but I think
I do not assert but I think
their talk of sin is itself an unjust sin.
Their saying sin is sin has loss
ولياليand the nights الصيفsummer فيin واديvalley of الشتاwinter
وليالي الصيف في وادي الشتا
للياليfor the nights شهرthe month of كانونKanun تحنyearn
لليالي شهر كانون تحن
And summer nights in Wadi al-Shita
And summer nights in Wadi Shita
yearn for the nights of the month of Kanun.
For nights of January yearn
أينwhere منfrom أيامthe days of جلعادGilead وماand not
أين من أيام جلعاد وما
برحتceased زيZayy لذكراهfor its memory تجنgoes mad
برحت زي لذكراه تجن
How far from the days of Gilead! And never
Where are days of Gilead and whatever
has Zayy ceased to go mad over its memory.
Did not cease like its memory picks
قولهمtheir saying شابhas grown gray وماand not تابrepented وماand not
قولهم شاب وما تاب وما
برحتceased عيناهhis two eyes للأعينtoward the eyes ترنوgaze
برحت عيناه للأعين ترنو
They say, 'He has grown gray but not repented'; and never
Their saying a youth who did not repent and whatever
have his eyes ceased to gaze toward other eyes,
His eyes did not cease to eyes they glance
تارةat times شزراًaskance وطوراًand at other times علناًopenly
تارة شزراً وطوراً علناً
فاتقواso fear اللّهGod بمنconcerning one whom يرويهtells his tale مينfalsehood
فاتقوا اللّه بمن يرويه مين
sometimes askance, and sometimes openly.
Sometimes openly, sometimes stealthily
So fear God concerning one whose tale falsehood tells.
So fear Allah for who gives him affection
