قد ضقت ذرعاً بالحياة ومن
يفقدloses أحبتهhis loved ones يضقreaches his limit ذرعاof endurance
يفقد أحبته يضق ذرعا
I can bear life no longer, and whoever
I'm exhausted with life and he who
loses his loved ones can bear no more.

وغدوتand I have become فيin بلدa land تكنفنيsurround me
وغدوت في بلد تكنفني
فيهin it الشرورthe evils ولاand not أرىI see دفعاa defense
فيه الشرور ولا أرى دفعا
And I now find myself in a land, beset
And I've become in a country that surrounds me
there by evils, and I see no way to repel them.
with evils and I see no defense
منwho ذاis there يواسينيconsoles me ويكلؤنيand watches over me
من ذا يواسيني ويكلؤني
فيin هذهthis الدنياworld ومنand who يرعىcares
في هذه الدنيا ومن يرعى
Who is there to console me and watch over me
Who will console me and shelter me
in this world, and who will care for me?
in this life and who will take care of me
كمhow many منof صديقa friend ليof mine يحاسننيtreats me kindly
كم من صديق لي يحاسنني
وكأنand as though تحتbeneath ثيابهhis clothes أفعىa viper
وكأن تحت ثيابه أفعى
How many a friend of mine treats me kindly,
How many friends of mine pretend to be friendly
yet it is as though a viper lay beneath his clothes.
yet under their clothes is a viper
يسعىhe moves فيخفيand so conceals لينthe softness ملمسهof his touch
يسعى فيخفي لين ملمسه
عنيfrom me مساربthe paths حيةof a snake تسعىthat slithers
عني مسارب حية تسعى
He moves, and the softness of his touch conceals
Seeking to hide from me the softness of its touch
from me the paths of a slithering snake.
the creeping moves of a snake
كمhow often حاولتhave tried هدميmy destruction معاولهمtheir pickaxes
كم حاولت هدمي معاولهم
وأبىbut refused الإلهGod فزادنيso He gave me more دفعاstrength to resist
وأبى الإله فزادني دفعا
How often their pickaxes have tried to tear me down,
How much I tried to destroy their buildings
but God refused, and gave me greater strength to resist.
but God refused so it brought me more defense
أصبحتI have become فرداًa lone man لاnot يناصرنيsupports me
أصبحت فرداً لا يناصرني
غيرexcept البيانeloquence وأصبحواand they have become جمعاa multitude
غير البيان وأصبحوا جمعا
I have become a lone man, with none to support me
I've become an individual with no supporters
but eloquence, while they have become a multitude.
except eloquence while they are a group
ومناهمand their wish أنthat يحطمواthey shatter بيديin my hand
ومناهم أن يحطموا بيدي
قلماًa pen أثارstirred up عليهمagainst them النقعاthe dust of battle
قلماً أثار عليهم النقعا
And their wish is to shatter in my hand
And their wish is to destroy by my hands
a pen that stirred up the dust of battle against them.
a pen that caused them sores
ولربand many a حرnoble man عابهdisparaged him نفرa band of men
ولرب حر عابه نفر
لاnot يصلحونthey are fit لنعلهfor his sandal شسعاa strap
لا يصلحون لنعله شسعا
And many a noble man has been disparaged by a band of men
And many free men blamed them
who are not fit to be a strap for his sandal.
