He became so bohemian that his bohemian self nearly

melted away, despite the physician who aids and heals.

In Egypt, O people, there are things so dear

to the soul that they almost sweep my breath away.

Yet the memory of you, O Wadi al-Shita, and love

for al-Sir's young oryxes top the heap in my head.

So, ah, how I long for the tenderness of the women coming to

al-Muwaqqar's water or Ibn Harmas's well!

And repose upon the damp sands, on

a pillow of my imaginings and my inner whispers.

And oh, how I long for a cup of wine mingled

with Rahub's water, and the wine jars on my terrace.

And repose on the homeland's sandy rise, and visions

that overwhelm me whenever my feeling grows insistent.

So tell the oryxes of Amman's slope that the oryxes

of Heliopolis have failed to tame me.

For many an initial twinge of fever returns to me

when I recall my companions in Amman.
