Halmalam, come: let us set our disheveled verse in order,

Gather up, gather up, my song

تأبى عليه شمائل قرشية

أن تستخف بمثلنا برفين

His Qurashi traits will not let him accept

The traits of Quraysh refuse

that Barfin should carry the likes of us away.

To take us lightly, so refined.

مولاي إِن الحسن لا وطن له

مولاي إِن الحسن لا وطن له

وحديث إخوان الصفاء شجون

وحديث إخوان الصفاء شجون

My lord, beauty has no homeland,

My lord, al-Hasan has no homeland,

and the talk of the Brethren of Purity has many branches.

And the speech of the brothers of purity are laments.

والأشرفية ما على ظبياتها

والأشرفية ما على ظبياتها

أَن لا تكون رمالها يبرين

أَن لا تكون رمالها يبرين

And al-Ashrafiyya—what blame lies on its gazelles

The noblewomen, nothing in their gazelle-like eyes

because its sands are not those of Yabrin?

That their sands not be silky.

إن العروبة والتعاجم في الهوى

إن العروبة والتعاجم في الهوى

سي فقدك تهيننا فنهون

سي فقدك تهيننا فنهون

Indeed, Arabness and foreignness in love

Arabness and foreignness in love

are alike; enough of your belittling us and bringing us low!

Are equal, so if you lose us, lament.

ودع الملام فما يلين قناتنا

ودع الملام فما يلين قناتنا

في حبها تعريضك الموزون

في حبها تعريضك الموزون

And leave off blame: our spear shaft does not bend

Leave off blame, for our fortitude does not

in loving her under your measured insinuation.

Soften for her, your subtle reproach.

هب شعرنا في الغانيات سخافة

ورطانة وكما وددت يكون

Suppose our poetry about beautiful women is foolishness

Grant our poetry in songs is inanity,

and foreign babble; let it be as you wished.

Lewdness and however you wish it be.

أفماله في شرع نقدك شافع

أفماله في شرع نقدك شافع

حتى ولو أوحت به برفين

حتى ولو أوحت به برفين

Does it, then, have no intercessor under the law of your criticism,

Are his deeds in the creed of your critique intercessors

even if Barfin inspired it?

Even if the refined whisper it?

برفين يا مولاي لا عثرت بكم

برفين يا مولاي لا عثرت بكم

في حلبة النظر السديد عيون

في حلبة النظر السديد عيون

Barfin, my lord—may you never be stumbled over

O my lord, the refined did not make you stumble

by eyes in the arena of sound judgment—

In the arena of straight insight.

رعبوبة ومن المحاسن حسبها

رعبوبة ومن المحاسن حسبها

أن الفؤاد بحسنها مفتون

أن الفؤاد بحسنها مفتون

is a delicate beauty; among her charms, it suffices

Loveliness, and her pedigree suffices her

that the heart is enthralled by her beauty.

That the heart be infatuated with her beauty.

لم يثنه عن أن يهيم بحبها

لم يثنه عن أن يهيم بحبها

عمر أقل سنيه خمسون

عمر أقل سنيه خمسون

It has not been deterred from losing itself in love for her

Neither her youth of less than fifteen years

by an age of at least fifty years.

Prevented him from passionately loving her.

أوبعد هذا هل علي وصاحبي

أوبعد هذا هل علي وصاحبي

حرج إِذا ناديت يا برفين

حرج إِذا ناديت يا برفين

And after this, are my companion and I to bear

Or after this, is there any fault on me and my companion
