How often I thought Baghdad—when we came to their encampments

east of Mahis—lay only a few handspans from me.

I gather innocent pleasure from her taverns,

    with al-Nuwasi in Bashshar’s salon,

and Ibn al-Shamaqmaq, standing upright like al-Habr,

serves drink and is served, though getting me drunk has exhausted him.

O Habr, bring it, for God, our Maker,

and Creator of the vine, is a truly all-forgiving Lord.

And there is nothing in a night spent in your company—

were people fair—that would diminish anyone’s standing.

By God, were it not for a ray of your beguilement,

like great spreading trees in a desolate desert,

life’s night would never have breathed forth the predawn hour,

nor would a traveler have sung in praise of traveling by night.
