Tell Abbud—perhaps speaking will heal me—

that the usurers are brothers of devils,

and that they—may God never empower their clique—

have driven the very faith out of me, despite my denunciations of them.

So this one says, “My debtor—how can you grant him respite?”

And that one shouts, “You have not jailed my debtor!”

As though people were slaves to their coin,

and the letter of the law were theirs to command.

O Shylock's clan, whoever takes your side

offends against justice, morality, and religion.

And whoever facilitates a matter that benefits

you is truly accursed, and the son of one accursed.

For the Franks' oppression does not match yours, nor

does the slaughter wrought by plagues match your slaughter of humankind.

Am I to imprison people to please you,

and for fear of dismissal from this lowly post,

or from a wish to draw a salary for which they minted

coins from the blood within my arteries?

    This post—if its duties are

reserved for you alone, God will let me do without it.

Indeed, the destitute are my brothers, and they have

a right—had you recognized it, you would not have blamed me.

And if it were up to me, you would never rejoice

over anyone ever jailed for a debt owed you.

So tile the sea in fury at my treatment of you,

and, if you can, hurl me into Hell.

For I will not turn back from plotting against your clique,

to safeguard the right of the penniless and the needy.
