Bring it—give it to me to drink, boy!

For the month of fasting has passed.

And play upon an oud's strings

    the beautiful melodies of love.

    فالاحتفاء بهم لزام

    Salma's brothers have stirred things up;

so honoring them is a duty.

    فيا هلا عم السلام

    And al-Habr has visited these parts;

    so welcome—peace is everywhere!

Come, let us journey by night to those

who have never known the taste of strife.

    And leave politics to those

who have mastered lining up words.

They have donned silk, while our people,

O Habr, cannot find a morsel to eat.

They broke their covenants: no covenants remain,

    nor faithfulness, nor honor.

A surfeit has made them ill,

while fever coursing through the bones has hounded you.

So they condemned you by their decrees,

while your people's noses are in the dust.

So you see them fidgeting, though in

    truth they are asleep.

If I get drunk and do not sober up,

I am not to blame, nor shall I be.

And if indeed I drink the cup

brimming full, it is because of the oppression of the base.

If I listen to the falā flute

and the oud, does the imam declare me an unbeliever?

    ك قد أضر بي السقام

    O Habr, tell me your people's story;

    illness has done me harm.

Where are the tambourines, and where is your drum?

Where is the tall, graceful woman?

Where is the kohl-eyed woman whose

glances have the deadliness of arrows?

Indeed, the rababa upon your chest

is, my brother, the most splendid medal.

O Habr, you have spent the years

    counting them, year after year.

Tell me, have you seen anything but

life, followed in turn by death?
