None disparaged your poetry but an uncouth bunch.

In the arena of taste, if you set them loose, they would limp.

Had they possessed any virtue of fairness,

They would not have denounced your wearing the bonjour coat, O Faraj.

An outfit for which the rabble and the boors reproached you.

    For in the dinner jacket and the bonjour coat lies a distinction;

The people of al-Zawra have dwelt on nothing else.

Proofs of the people's preeminence have been established.

So tell the one who foolishly loathes your redingote:

This is progress that no crookedness has marred.

    فما عليك إذا أسعدته حرج

    And turn aside with my heart to a dwelling it is mad for;

For no blame falls on you if you gladden it.

Indeed, though I am a free man of conservative bent,

I am a slave to eyes that are wide and intensely dark.

O oryx calves of the Ghassan clan, we have no

Path away from you in our quest for love.

By God, the east wind is indeed a scorching desert blast if

    Madaba's fragrance eludes its gusts.

Abboud says: Whoever leaves his job

Willingly is a madman, with frenzy in his nerves.

O sheikh, O sheikh, set reason aside,

For this is a crisis unlikely ever to find relief,

Only a vile man praises drinking from wells

Whose people are assailed by destitution and burning thirst.

So seek bounty from a tent in the desert,

    Where the fire of hospitality blazes when evening falls;

A hair-cloth tent, whose owner is spared humiliation

By a proud, spirited nose, not by a door and bolt.

I remember free men in Raghadan who, when they rose

To champion justice, not one jugular vein of theirs bled.

They utter not a word; if you make them speak, they garble it.

Is it not true that, but for Raghadan's radiance, there would be no unveiling

Of the lamps' lights in Amman's night?
