After tugging and pushing, it made peace with him—

death's hand, in his humble grave.

So his youth roused a flock of weeping women,

who kindle grief's fires within my ribs.

And leave the boon companions and life, as you see,

weeping over my huts with tears from my hermitages.

O friends, weeping has exhausted me; so moisten

with its hot tears, kindly, the throat of my tear ducts.

For today, neither is Wadi al-Shita's time

in my hand, nor is the lush valley my companion.

Has Fuad died? Yes—and he has been carried off

by death's vicissitudes; Fuad will not return.

Has Fuad died? Yes, he died, and they swayed—

his sides—in a death that robbed my beds of rest.

    فابن القصور يموت كابن الشارع

    Death's arrows never miss their mark;

the son of palaces dies like the son of the street.

So leave the tomb and its guest to whisper together,

and traverse the vast expanse of calamities.

And let your cousin, Fuad, with his verse

lament you, if no hindrance stands in his way.

Calamities have battled me, yet won nothing

from me but my assailant's nose rubbed in the dust.

So ask calamities: how often, how many times,

have they hoped for good thanks to my feigned limp?

In those encounters I allotted them sandals, and walked along

my path, heedless of the measurer's measure.

And I left them in pieces, some lamenting

others, bowing to the judgment of reality.

But losing you, Fuad—even if it was

an appointed end drawing near—will remain my worst calamity.

of death gnawing the flourishing branch of youth.

This is Sha'ub, Death; stand before her decree,

in dumbstruck pauses, wearing a humbled man's garb.

    ما زاله بفؤاد ليس بجامع

    Abandon hopes; the gathered company—leave it to itself;

what scattered it by taking Fuad will not reunite it.

Fuad, your calamity—and calamities are many—

will remain the calamity of a lifetime, without rival.

Fuad, tell me: what has happened to the rose of your face,

that it has turned from crimson to vivid yellow?

and snapped the life of the keen-witted, gifted man.

What harm would it have done you to spare his youth

and take the soul of the aimlessly wandering fool?

O Irbid of the beads, may rain greet you,

despite estrangement and every severing of ties.

in al-Salt by a death notice that robbed my beds of rest.

and the words 'Fuad has died' paralyzed my finger joints.

famished, bidding welcome to the brilliant guest.

Even graves grow hungry—what a wonder!

Woe to the strong at the hands of the hungry weak!

Fuad, what is the world? A mirage on a level plain,

a brazen, cunning rogue rattling through a desert.

If its glitter deceives the greedy, it will never

be able to toy with the contented man's chin.

So dwell on death's flank, for it is—

by your father—richer than my lushest haunts.

    رد التحية على ردك نافعي

    I have come to beg you to return my greeting;

return the greeting; my solace rests upon your reply.
