Are you every day worn out and terrified,
Are you in anguish each day, disquieted,
with homelands stirring your longing and abodes beguiling you?
Yearning for homelands, pining for four?

You spent your boyhood lovesick, and devoted to it
I spent my youth in youth, and turned toward it,
a youth that passed, steeped in longing.
A youth spent, while filled with passion.

When the south wind blows gently,
rush in longing toward Wadi al-Arakah.
You almost rush with yearning for Wadi Arak.

You almost melt with yearning whenever there appears
You almost melt with yearning when
before your eyes a lightning flash gleaming over al-Jazirah.
A glint flashes on the peninsula for your eyes.

For ever since amulets were hung upon you there,
Since amulets were tied onto you,
you, unlike your age-mate, have been enamored of it.
You are enamored without your ground being shaken.

Do you imagine the dunes of the trackless wastes, young man,
Do you think the sands of Al-Mahama, O youth,
to be gardens where the grove of happiness spreads its branches,
Are gardens in which happiness is branching for you?

so that their memory saddens you and their mention beguiles you,
So the memory of it tempts you and the thought of it makes you pine,
and you long to dwell there when what is spacious grows cramped?
And you long for its dwellings when the refuge feels cramped.

So let the civilized life bestowed upon you delight
So enjoy what civilization has given you
your heart's depths, which pleasure has deeply stirred to longing.
Of wings that are wearied by enjoyment.

And do not be ungrateful for civilization's blessings,
And do not be ungrateful for the blessings of culture
for some of which the eye of Bedouin life weeps.
While the eye of the Bedouin sheds tears over some of it.

You settled in a valley without crops; nothing was reaped
It alighted in a barren valley that yielded no crops
from its expected fertility except drought.
Other than famine, contrary to expectation.

So cast aside the lure of passionate longing, and come to your senses,
Leave off the seduction of youth and beware,
for you graze upon a plain of illusion.
For you are grazing in a plain of delusion!

I say to myself, when its words run on
I say to myself, when her talk ended
recklessly, trying to persuade one who will not be persuaded:
Abruptly, with persuasion that does not persuade:

Yes, her neck is bare of jewelry and adornments,
Yes, her hands are idle of trinkets and adornment,
but it is studded with noble deeds.
But they are set with noble deeds.

And though the fertility of her melodies is little,
are indeed lusher than every pasture found in the West.
For one who found every pasture in the West most fertile,

So how dear is a hair-woven tent, with nothing in it
How excellent a house of poetry that has
for a baseborn foreign brute, whose habit is treachery, to covet!
A cure for my habitual treachery is coveted!

And how unwelcome a palace raised in a garden,
And how excellent a palace built in an orchard
where, against my will, the foreign brute has a dwelling!
Despite my cubbyhole in it for the cure fenced off.

And a mirage amid the wilderness, deceiving a thirsty man,
The specter of the wasteland deceives a thirsty one
quenches our burning thirst better than London's river.
With our mirage of a river from London enriched.

And an owl that cheers the night in your gloom
with a hoot that makes valiant warriors' hearts quake,
With the weeping of homesick palm-doves distressed.

I prefer for my hearing the trills

Of an instrument making music for other than my country, O brother Arab!
