And al-Habr revels in the bliss of his vagrancy,

Among full-bosomed maidens, surrounded by moons

That caress the drum; I watch him in his drunkenness.

Then, if he sobers, he drinks of a flute's tawny wine,

    هيهات من شدوها ترجيع أطيار

    And lets his gaze roam over a beautiful woman's curves;

Far short of her song falls the trilling of birds.

This is life—not days you spend

Roaming the earth, journey after journey,

Out of zeal for service whose benefit has eluded you,

And whose reward was the hardship of travel,

And a post from which you gained no ease

In life, save a reward like Sinimmar's.

O Habr, bring it, for God, our Maker,

And Creator of the vine, is a Lord most forgiving.

Today is for wine; so pay no heed to tomorrow's affairs,

Nor to fretting over good fortune and bad.

In the arena of time, the secret of winning has no

Condition, nor is it entrusted to a racecourse.
