They bridled the young she-camel; there is no gainsaying parting,
They have bound the shackles, so separation cannot be undone,
nor a bandage for a wound that injustice has reopened.
Nor a wound soothed, whose hurt was caused by injustice.

They bridled the young she-camel; I do not know—is their destination
They have bound the shackles, so I know not where they will take them -
Amman, or were they summoned somewhere short of it?
To Oman or elsewhere they are being led.

O company of friends, longing grips me; in anguish I almost
O companions in anguish! In passion I burn and yearn
melt—a longing not kindled by black eyes.
To melt away - lit by eyes dark as night.

So bring it, brimming, from the heart of the wine jar,
Bring them to me from the valley's heart, well-watered -
as though it were monotheism on the brow of polytheism.
As if, on the brow of idols, God's oneness is inscribed.
عسىmay it be لماfor what بيwithin me منof غصاتchoking pangs حبهمlove for them

May the choking pangs I suffer from loving them
Maybe the bitterness of their love that afflicts me
be dispelled by what the wine-seller bestows.
Will be dispersed by the wine's generosity.

ياO هندHind ماليwhat have I to do وماwith what يرويهhe relates it عبودAbboud
Abboud says the gathering on Judgment Day will bring us together;
Says Uboud: “The Resurrection will reunite us.”
O Hind, what have I to do with what Abboud relates?
O Hind! What care I for what Uboud relates?
ماnot زالceased وصلكunion with you ماas long as رفتfluttered ذوائبهits tresses
علىover فؤاديmy heart وظلand the shade الحبlove ممدودoutspread
Union with you endures, so long as its tresses flutter
Your love has not ceased, its passions still raging
over my heart, and love's shade is outspread.
Within my heart, while tender love lies extended.

So what heart, scorched by estrangement's noonday heat,
What heart estranged by remoteness, can endure
can be satisfied by shade whose two awnings are promises?
The ardour of the trysts’ recalled memory?
