    In my soul, O sheikh, are things stirred by your piety,

    Which have cramped the expanses of my spacious breast.

    Do you pelt me every two days with a sermon,

    Loose-fitting, woven by jurisprudence and fatwa-giving?

    Abbud, O sheikh, I am no longer a target

    For people to pelt with reproach as they please.

    All those who went too far beneath our tamarisk

    Have come away before the two princes bearing two disgraces.

    What have I to do with Damascus? Its Ghouta has no shallow pool,

    Nor are its peaks as lofty as the uplands.

    My eyes found no comfort there in a maiden,

    Nor relished there the sight of a beautiful woman.

    The heart finds a barren tract more pleasing than you,

    From Irbid's plain, with neither grass nor water.

    And every eye whose delight is Huzaym al-Zaby

    Will not be captivated by your luxuriant gardens.

    Anywhere but Wadi al-Shita, anywhere but its haunts,

    No shadows spread abundant shade for longing.

    Love, burning heartache, and passionate longing have their source—

    Ever since Eve sensed their first stirring in the heart—

    In haunts whose names were immortalized by gems

    Of verse by one whom Ziza taught to yearn.

    And Gilead's vineyard: after the wine they pressed

    From it in Salt, no tawny wine delights the drinkers.

    Nor, after Qa‘war, is there a wine-seller who deals with us

    If green or white money disowns our pocket.

    Nor, after Amman, an abode whose people never lose

    The blessings bestowed by the prince, lord of Raghadan.

    Wine is an abomination; concerning its prohibition were revealed

    Verses whose wording is neither riddle nor hint.

    Abbud, O sheikh, you in whose gatherings

    The mother gets a whisper, the Ascension an uproar:

    By what pronouncement has it indeed become forbidden

    To drinking companions and the fortunate—beer?

    People have opinions about the cup—oh, what a wonder!

    Does the cup not have opinions about humankind?

    أن الشفاه بوادي السير لمياء

    O sheikh, what is learning? Enough for a man is to know

    That the lips in Wadi al-Sir are dusky;

    وأن مصطافها موءاب أَسماء

    And that Wadi al-Shita's young oryx are dark-hued;

    And that Asma's summer retreat is Moab;

    بالعلم والعلم في عمان أَزياء

    And that ignorance has a merit you do not possess

    Through learning—and in Amman, learning is fashions;

    And that the ears of the country's deputies, save

    For what the foreign brute demands, are deaf.

    If a brimmed hat had been your turban,

    They would have given it a post, and wealth would not have passed you by.

    وشرها أن شر الست سوداء

    Time's calamities come in many varied kinds;

    And the worst is that the worst of the six is black;

    وأن تريك سوي النهج عجماء

    And that a yes-man should light the path of learning;

    And that a speechless beast should show you the right road.

    There is no place for justice and fairness in a land

    Where every mother's son commands and forbids.

    And learning is like ignorance—I have gone too far, and

    Forgotten that my salary has put water in my mouth.

    لا تشمتي فالحجا شد وإرخاء

    O crisis, today you have made me mutter;

    Do not gloat: good sense is tightening and slackening.

    A free man must have a day on which he says:

    My impetuosity, your salary, and dismissal are all alike.

    Here is your gift: take it—away with your bounty!

    For it is, by God, a hideous stain.

    Do not think the wound in one who does not cry out in anguish,

    O Cox, has healed: oppression reopens wounds.

    And justice's countenance must shine forth,

    However long a dark night has hung over its people.

    And if the cauldrons of weakness's strength seethe,

    A ewe turns tiger, and sheep become lions.
