If what is being said is poetry, then there draws near

If it is poetry that is said, it has come near

A time when we may rightly offer a eulogy.

A time right for us for lament

وأخوك بالشام العريقة نازل

لك في قريضك مسعف ومعين

And your brother resides in venerable al-Sham,

And your brother in ancient Damascus has descended

A helper and supporter to you in your verse.

To help you in your ode, a helper and ally

أَوحى لك التدخين ما قد قلته

Smoking inspired you with what you have said;

In every letter of it is nicotine.
