    Would that Ishaq al-Samarah,

O people, had understood the phrase,

And poured and poured and grown tipsy,

And lent this cup to his neighbor.

Perhaps the pure wine, and what it holds,

Will one day unravel the phrase for him.

Then you would see as futility—utter futility—

    The borrowed robes of youth.

    I was never a minister,

Nor will I head the ministry.

But I, in defiance of the universe,

O son of the female adviser,

Shall remain the emblem of piety,

And live as the emblem of purity.

My soul, like my cup, bears no

Trace of the filth of debauchery.

And among people, I need only,

    O people, Ishaq al-Samarah,

And wine like a rooster's eye,

    Which freshness itself envies,

From the blossoms of lofty Gilead,

And from the hills of that beacon.

I gave it drink, then drank it,

Then heat took possession of my soul.

    Then behold that smoke—

I see it clinging to a spark.

So come here, where I am,

And beware the fire's lost one—a sign.

    Indeed, the titles that

We used to follow in our naivety

Were set right by Mumtaz al-Samawi

    In Ishaq al-Samarah's tavern.
