You have already learned my secret and what I make public.

So go about your business; folly is not my way.

Indeed, she whose wild ardor I once pursued

has given consent and yielded after defiance.

    سَعى عَلَيَّ بِكَأسَيها الجَديدانِ

    What the days have brought is experience enough for me;

night and day served me their two cups.

The world revealed its flaw, and was borne out by

what time reclaimed of what it had given me.

If you see me urging the pale camels onward, awaiting

the promise of hopes, finding pasture outside my homelands,

yet I once passed evenings as Time’s drinking companion, as it mixed for me

the cup of love and greeted me with sweet basil.

Ask fresh love whether I used to wear it out,

when youth had a soul that walked within my body:

days of abundant reproach and defiance,

and wine sped through my reason and my sorrows.

I left neither the curtained chamber nor its fair maiden bereft of me,

nor left my drinking companions alone with tawny wine.

And many a night the star could scarcely stay awake through

I passed in night-talk with a bewitching beauty of deadly coquetry.

When she yielded, the weight of her hips defied her,

like a sand mound crowned by a branch of the bān tree.

After morning had raised her, she seemed

a drowsy woman, borne along by a drunken man’s swaying frame.

She turned away, gliding like a snake, having risen—

save that her hips and limbs were weighed down.

I lived to see days in the course of time through which I gained

the favor of youth, which had once defied me.

    زَفَّ الكَرى طَيفَها وَهناً فَحَيّاني

    Their nights brought me a visitor;

Sleep ushered her phantom in late at night, and it greeted me.

She spent the night refusing, unaware of what she had done

to a sleeper she left with a waking man’s longing.

So now I have desisted, since time held back my hand,

and the nights have shunned me after submitting.

Far be it from my eyes for their tears to run dry

over a distant love or neighbors’ departure.

I had never stored up complaint for any calamity,

until time tested my secrets and made me complain.

Forward they bore us swaying upon our saddles—

creatures of wind in the shapes of male ostriches.

Their flight, with dawn overtaking them, was like

an arrow’s flight from a bow for short shafts.

We entrust the night with the secrets of our cares when

drowsiness reveals the weary companion’s weakness.

They plunge onward with a disheveled rider who, if he could, would relieve them,

cleaving uncharted hollows, from lowland to lowland.

    فَقَدَّهُ بِسَؤُورِ اللَيلِ مِذعانِ

    His resolve put an end to night by traveling through it;

so he cleft it with an obedient mount that travels by night.

Dawn lingered within it, then dismantled it,

and the dazzling, crimson face of day withdrew.

He glides through the night, heedless of his forebodings,

as though he were riding on a serpent’s head.

He has not sheathed his sword since its straps were fastened,

for a single day, nor drawn it except against a wrongdoer.
