دَعَوتَyou called upon أَميرَthe commander of المُؤمِنينَthe faithful وَلَمand not تَكُنyou were
هُناكَthere وَلَكِنand yet مَنwhoever يَخَفfears يَتَجَشَّمِbraves hardship
You called upon the Commander of the Faithful, though you were not
You called upon the Commander of the Faithful, but he was not there.
There; but whoever fears braves hardship.
Yet whoever fears, endures with fortitude.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you إِذwhen تَدعوyou call upon الخَليفَةَthe caliph ناصِراًas a helper
لَكَالمُتَرَقّيsurely like one climbing فيin السَماءِthe sky بِسُلَّمِwith a ladder
And when you call upon the caliph for help,
When you call upon the Caliph as a supporter,
You are surely like one climbing into the sky with a ladder.
You are like one climbing to heaven on a ladder.
كَذاكَlikewise الصَدىthe echo تَدعوهُyou summon it مِنfrom حَيثُwhere لاnot تَرىyou see
وَإِنand if تَتَوَهَّمهُyou imagine it تَمُتyou die فيin التَوَهُّمِthe imagining
So too you summon the echo from where you cannot see it,
Thus you call upon an echo from where you cannot see.
And if you imagine it, you die in the imagining.
If you imagine it, you will die in your delusions.
هَجَوتَyou lampooned قُرَيشاًQuraysh عامِداًdeliberately وَنَحَلتَنيand ascribed it to me
رُوَيدَكtake your time يَظهَرbecomes clear ماwhat تَقولُyou say فَيُعلَمِso it becomes known
You deliberately lampooned Quraysh and ascribed it to me.
You insulted Quraysh deliberately and attributed me to folly.
Take your time: what you say will become clear and known.
Restrain yourself; what you say will become clear and known.
إِذاif كانَis مِثليone like me فيin قَبيليmy tribe فَإِنَّهُthen indeed he
عَلىconcerning اِبنِthe son of لُؤَيٍّLu'ayy قَصرَةًof necessity غَيرُnot مُتهَمِsuspected
If one like me is in my tribe, then he
If one like me is in my tribe,
Is necessarily beyond suspicion concerning Ibn Lu'ayy.
He is superior to the son of Lu'ayy, above reproach.
سَيَكشِفُكَwill expose you التَعديلُimpartial judgment عَماconcerning what قَذَفتَنيyou accused me
بِهِof it فَتَأَخَّرَso step back عارِفاًknowingly أَوor تَقَدَّمِstep forward
Impartial judgment will expose you over what you accused me
The testimony will uncover you from what you attributed to me.
Of; so step back knowingly, or step forward.
So delay knowing, or go forward.
فَإِنَّfor indeed قُرَيشاًQuraysh لايُغادَرُis not forsaken وِدُّهاtheir affection
وَلاnor يُستَحالُis altered عَهدُهاtheir covenant بِالتَرَحُّمِthrough compassion
For Quraysh's affection is not forsaken,
Indeed Quraysh does not neglect its affection,
Nor is their covenant altered through compassion.
Nor can its covenant be changed with commiseration.
مَضىwent ahead سَلَفٌforebears مِنهُمof theirs وَصَلّىand followed closely بِعَقبِهِمat their heels
لَناof ours سَلَفٌforebears فيamong الأَوَّلِthe first المُتَقَدِّمِthe foremost
Forebears of theirs went ahead, and at their heels followed
An ancestry from them has passed and prayed in our footsteps.
Forebears of ours, among the first and foremost.
We have an ancestry in the early forefathers.
جَرواthey raced فَجَرَيناso we raced سابِقينَleading بِسَبقِهِمthrough their lead
كَماjust as اِتَّبَعَتfollowed كَفٌّa hand نَواشِرَsinews of مِعصَمِa wrist
They raced, and we raced ahead through their earlier lead,
They pulled so we pulled, preceding with their lead,
As a hand follows the sinews of a wrist.
As a palm follows the palms at its base.
وَإِنَّand indeed الَّذيhe who يَسعىstrives لِيَقطَعَto sever بَينَناbetween us
كَمُلتَمِسِlike one seeking اليَربوعِthe jerboa فيin جُحرِthe burrow of أَرقَمِa speckled snake
And he who strives to sever the bond between us
Indeed, he who tries to cut between us,
Is like one seeking a jerboa in a speckled snake's burrow.
Is like one seeking refuge in the den of a hyena.
أَضَلَّكَled you astray قَرعُstriking at الآبِداتِwild beasts طَريقَهاtheir trail
فَأَصبَحتَso you have become مِنbecause of عَميائِهاtheir obscurity فيin تَهَيُّمِbewildered wandering
Striking at wild beasts led you astray from their trail,
The beating of pots misguided you from their path,
So their obscurity has left you wandering bewildered.
So you became lost in their blindness, in confusion.
وَخانَتكَand betrayed you عِندَduring الجَريthe race لَمّاwhen اِتَّبَعتَهاyou followed them
تَميمٌTamim فَحاوَلتَso you sought العُلىthe heights بِالتَقَحُّمِby plunging headlong
And during the race, when you followed them, you were betrayed by
When you followed them in fleeing, they betrayed you.
Tamim; so you sought the heights by plunging headlong.
Tamim tried the heights in clambering.
فَأَصبَحتَso you have become تَرمينيyou shoot at me بِسَهميwith my arrow وَتَتَّقيand guard against
يَديmy hand بِيَديwith my hand أَصلَيتَyou kindled نارَكَyour fire فَاِضرِمِso set it ablaze
So now you shoot at me with my own arrow, and guard against
So you have become throwing my arrows at me and guarding
My hand with my hand; you kindled your fire—so set it ablaze.
against my hands with my hands. You ignited your fire, so kindle it!
