Qatul severed the cord's binding strand,
My beloved cut off the cord of companionship,
And went far away with the heart of one whose reason love had enslaved.
And came with a heart full of madness.
سَبَقَتpreceded رُجوعَthe return of السَجفِthe curtain نَظرَتُهُhis glance

His glance outran the curtain's return,
Her gaze preceded the return of the twilight,
And caught a tender young gazelle unawares.
And struck the cheek of a weaning child.
لَولاif not for تَخَفُّرُهاher modesty لَأَطعَمَناwould have fed us

But for her modesty, we would have been fed
If not for her pretense, we would have
By hints in her of a smile of yielding.
Given her streams of laughter and generosity.

With its shoulder, the north wind lifted the hems
She raised her left shoulder, bare
Of the bower before soft, wide-eyed women.
Of any cloak, unlike gentle damsels.

Startled, they rushed toward her, heavy of
Then heavily built flirts swaggered,
Hips, full-fleshed where the anklet nestles.
With ample rumps concealed in their robes.

They helped her rise, her anklets in pairs,
They rose with the jingling of their anklets,
Paired braids of thick, coal-black hair.
Like the jingling of a vigorous young camel.

They concealed her with their hands, though already
They screened themselves with their palms, after
The shots of an unerring archer had pierced through.
The arrows of the skillful archer had pierced.
تَبِعَhe followed الصِباyouthful passion وَقَضىand fulfilled بِنَظرَتِهِwith his glance
وَطَراًa longing وَساوَرَand grappled with خُطَّةَthe ordeal of القَتلِbeing slain
He followed youthful passion and, with his glance, fulfilled
The youth pursued his desire and fulfilled his quest,
A longing, and grappled with mortal peril.
Though the path led to the realm of murder.
وَفَتىًand many a youth يَعُدُّreckons اللَيلَthe night رَوحَتَهُhis evening outing

سَبعُa beast of prey الهُمومِof cares لِذِكرِهاat their mention مُشلِcalling them forth
And many a youth who reckons night his evening outing,
A man who counts the night as his comfort,
A beast of cares, calling them forth at their mention.
While worries dog him with her memory.
كَلَّفتُهُI charged him with ماwhat فَوقَwas beyond طاقَتِهِhis endurance
دُلَجاًnight travel تَنالُstirs حَفيظَةَthe sense of honor of الفَسلِthe weakling
I charged him with more than he could bear:
I tasked him beyond his capacity,
Night travel that stirs a weakling's sense of honor.
A peril that try the temper of a stalwart man.
فَتَنَجَّزَso he demanded fulfillment from الهِمّاتِhis resolves مَوعِدَهاof their promise

وَاللَيلُand the night مُعتَكِفٌremaining fixed عَلىupon رِجلِa leg
So he called on his resolves to keep their promise,
So he accomplished his pledge,
While night lingered upon one leg.
While the night lingered on one foot.

He undertook night travel, and drowsiness made him stumble,
He took to the road as slumber overcame him,
So he seemed a pack upon the camel-saddle.
As if he were a traveler riding his mount.

And many a scorching noon—I folded away its furnace,
With a cooking pot I prepared,
While its depths and surfaces boiled—
Its sides and surface boiling,

With the speed of a fleet she-camel, upon whom tower
With the moan of a moaning woman,
A noble camel's neck and a stud-camel's head.
Led by the guide of the highborn and the camel stallion.

She speeds on with a demon's frenzy and strides
She escaped to a barren valley on hasty feet,
Of youthful haste and an ostrich's proud gait.
Hurried by the youth and the prodding of the driver.

She set off at evening; dawn never crossed her path
The morning came upon her and did not pause
But she had already torn it open from the front.
Before ravishing her completely.
