    O you who are love-stricken,

    rejection has worn you thin.

    خالَفَكَ السُهودُ

    So you are crazed with love;

    wakefulness has turned against you.

You spend the night awake; already

    sleep has bidden you farewell.

And in the heart is a fire

    that never dies down.

    Flames kindle it,

    with love as their fuel.

    If one day I say,

"It has been quenched," it grows.

    O my two reproachers, desist,

for I am stricken with love.

You two have heaped reproaches on me—

    if only reproach could help!

My heart has been struck down

    by a slim-waisted, bashful maiden,

    soft-bodied and playful,

    slender beneath her sash, supple.

    Her abandonment is near,

and union with her is far.

    Her speech is beguiling,

    leading toward youthful passion.

    And her gaze is languid,

and her glance is a hunter.

And it, for its own sake, when

    it wrongs, reaps benefit.

    Drowsy, yet unlike the drowsy,

    she slays whomever she wills.

Like the full moon after ten nights,

    accompanied by auspicious stars.

And her front teeth are spaced apart,

    and her saliva is cool,

    as though it held musk

    mingled with wine.

And her figure is tall and slender,

    delicately nurtured, finely shaped.

    And her waist is delicate,

    slender and supple,

as though it were a twig

    swaying where it is planted.

    And her rump is heavy,

    making her waist sway,

as though it were a sand dune

    packed firm by frost.

    She has, from the gazelles,

    a necklace-bearing throat and neck.

As though he were a gazelle,

    alone in a land,

    or a splendid idol,

    worshipped in his monastery.

I envy him time and again,

and one like him is envied.

    هَل يَنفَعُ الجُحودُ

    She has denied her love;

    does denial do any good?

Whoever blames me for loving her,

    his counsel is rejected.

    O Sihr, grant me union,

for I am stricken with love.

    Indeed, through what I endure

of love for you, I am exhausted.

Be generous to a lovesick man,

    whom sleeplessness has tormented.

He stays awake for love of you,

    while you lie asleep.

    How long, my heart's desire,

    will the promise remain unfulfilled?

    Love now, within my heart,

    begins and begins again.

Woe is me! I am the outcast.

Woe is me! I am the fugitive.

Woe is me! I am the tormented one.

Woe is me! I am the solitary one.

Woe is me! I am the one fed hopes.

Woe is me! I am the lonely one.

Woe is me! I am the worn-out one.

Woe is me! I am the lost one.

Love for you has destroyed me,

    and love does not perish.

And love, O my heart's desire—

    even its mildest is severe.

And love is my drinking companion,

and love sits at my side.

And love is my new possession,

and love is my old inheritance.

    And love, for me, whenever

I wear it out, is new.

I bear witness that my heart

    is steadfast in enduring love.

    It bears all this,

    and bearing it is arduous.

Were it made of solid rock,

    the rock would crumble.

    And noble lords,

not one of them a subordinate—

    all of them stout-hearted,

    none of them aloof.

    Folly has departed from them,

    so their judgment is sound.

    They are served pure wine,

    its delicious savor at hand.

    It existed in Noah's time,

    and they were its soldiers,

    until, when they were destroyed,

    Thamud bequeathed it.

    Sun-bright wine,

    its demon rebellious,

    made by Christians,

    not nurtured by Jews.

And with us is a gazelle,

    hunting with his gaze,

    perfectly formed, guileless,

    necklaces gain splendor from him.

    So that he seems, from

    his innocence, dull-witted.

And he never ceased pouring for us,

    while our life was easeful,

    wine that set upon

    our cheeks a rosy flush.

    As though its drinkers

    had shackles on their shins,

    until eyes drooped

    and cheeks grew red,

    in a radiant gathering,

    graced by those present:

    noblemen, generous,

fair of face, proud of bearing.

    Above them are birds,

    whose cries are song,

    and beneath them gardens,

    their plants neatly arrayed.

    Their cups are full,

    brimming and still,

    garlanded with myrtle,

    and the garlanding adorned them.

    Like daughters of the water,

    whom thunderclaps have frightened,

    then, at one moment, bowing,

    and at another, prostrate.

And with them are frame drums,

and a piper and an oud.

They plunged into a sea of revelry,

    whose tides flow on,

until they grew drunk and rose,

    their gathering worthy of praise.

Whoever says the like of this

    is indeed fortunate.

    This, to me, is immortality,

if only immortality would endure for me.
