    O talebearer, whose harm to us did us good,

    Fear of you saved my eye's pupil from drowning.

    I hold back tears whose driver is relentless,

    Wounded in the eye by languid pupils.

    Speak on, for separation's calamity has overtaken

    One whose heart is aflame between longing and anxiety.

    وَقَد سَمِعتِ عَلى الإِكراهِ فَاِنطَلِقي

    Not every reproaching woman has my ear;

    And you have already heard against your will—so depart.

    For I did not forsake love out of ignorance of its delight,

    Nor did I defy the god of reason out of rashness.
